My topic was to talk a bit about what high school students and their families may be thinking as they come on a campus tour. I did leave some time for the students to ask me any questions as well. I was amazed at the insightful questions they were asking me. Many of their questions were about how I maximized my time as a student, my favorite experiences, and just general advice. This got me thinking more about how blessed I have been with people answering my questions over the years and how too few people ask the right people the right questions.

No matter what stage in your life, seeking advice from someone with more experience than you have in a subject area is an excellent way to gain knowledge and build connections with others. OR, not being afraid to ask a question of someone can be very valuable or just provide insight.

I find myself trying to ask questions of people more often wherever I go. It may be picking the brain of a barista at a coffee shop about how their machine works, asking another father tips on parenting, or any other random thing. I encourage you to not be afraid to ask those around you questions about things...you'll be surprised what you may learn or what connection you may make.

Android Time

Do you have an Android phone? Thinking about dropping it? There are plenty of good excuses to drop a class after the semester has started, but it’s not always an easy decision. Here are the top four reasons to withdraw from a course, with advice on when to go with your gut … and get outta there! Read on:

Reason No. 1: It’s gonna screw your GPA.

Drop it if: The first test was tough, and you still don’t make the grade when the second one rolls around. Says New York University junior Maddy Smith: “Before I transferred to NYU, I was taking anatomy and physiology at Villanova. The first test, I got a D+. I stuck it out, thinking I would do better. For the next test, I studied harder. I even got a tutor and attended office hours … to then get a D-. It got to the point where even if I did better on the next test, I still wouldn’t even pull off a C. I knew it was time to withdraw.”

Don’t drop it if:

You don’t have enough credits to remain a full-time student.

It’s too late to enroll in another course.

The class is a requirement for your major (and you won’t be able to fit it into your schedule next time around).

Note: If you’re still failing after a few tests and a tutor isn’t helping, make tracks to meet with your advisor -- ASAP!

Reason No. 2: The class is a total snore.

Drop it if: Your eyes are glazing over, and you find the information useless. Perhaps your time could be better spent focusing on something else. Says NYU soph John Michael: “Freshman year … a history of communications class … I dreaded going every day. The subject was boring, we got a ton of work and it never interested me. I just never wanted to go.”

Don’t drop it if:

The information is valuable or otherwise useful. (“I ended up staying enrolled because I knew the information would help me later,” says Michael. “I suppose if I never learned some basic info, I’d be behind in other classes.”)

The class is a prerequisite.

Excelling in the class can help you cozy up to the professor for a future job or internship.

Reason No. 3: You hate the professor.

Drop it if: You love the subject, but the professor just doesn’t challenge or inspire you -- or worse, has it out for you. Look into taking the class another semester with a different teacher. Says Megan Huntley, a junior at Colgate University: “While I was really interested in modern Jewish history, after sitting through the lecture, I knew I wouldn’t end up liking the course. The professor was knowledgeable, but her delivery was nothing but boring. I’d rather save the class for later when I’d get everything I possibly can out of it.”

Don’t drop it if:

The add/drop date has passed (and you can’t recover course fees).

Dropping a course will mess up a scholarship or grant.

Note: Sticking it out could be a lesson in perseverance, since life is full of challenges … such as dealing with difficult or lackluster people.

Reason No. 4: Your stress level is off the charts.

Drop it if: Your schedule is so loaded with tough-to-the-core classes that you’re missing out on the full college experience you deserve. Says Rutgers University freshman Max Young: “Tons of kids get so stressed out they end up paying other people to do their essays. Even worse, I know kids who take anxiety medicine or Adderall to function. Dropping one class and taking on an easier one really helped me balance out last semester. I’d recommend that over high blood pressure any day.”

Don’t drop it if:

You’re this close to meeting your requirements (and this class will get you there).

You’re going in for the homestretch (i.e., approaching finals week).

Dropping will prevent you from graduating on time, studying abroad or taking an internship.

17 Smart Ways to Live Cheaper on Campus

By David Replogle

Living on a shoestring budget? Whether your parents float you funds or you’re pulling a part-time paying gig, here’s how to stre-------tch every precious penny.

Broke -- it’s a common catch in student jargon. “OMG, I broke my phone at that rager last night” or “I just broke up with my girlfriend ’cause she was cheating on me with my best bud.” But when used as an adjective, the word describes the financial status of most college kids.

Unless Dad is handing over his preferred platinum card or you strike it rich selling those musty ol’ Pokemon cards, you’ll have to get by on meager means. Here are some painless ways to get major bang for your buck … even if it’s your last buck.

Put the "Eat" in Creativity

Whether you’re craving a change from the monotonous glop of the dining hall, celebrating a friend’s birthday at a nearby bistro or taking a study break to go for a late-night munch, your wallet will take a hit. Cutting back on these extravagances means getting clever.

Buy in bulk When stashing snacks in your room, think long term. Talk to your roommates about pitching in for some grub, then head to the nearest warehouse retail chain to stock up on industrial-sized cheaper-in-the-long-run crates of Ramen packets and other non-perishables. Many discount clubs offer collegiate membership rates, and some give free introductory one-time shopping passes for non-members to bypass the annual fee altogether.

Use the student discount Grocery stores, restaurants and even places on campus usually have discounts for students. Even if you don’t see it advertised, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Have your student ID at all times. It could save 15 percent on that panini or score you a free dessert!

Sniff out free food Complimentary chow is almost as popular on campus as the latest gossip on CollegeACB. “Club meetings and churches are always looking to give out food to potential new members,” says Robby Panos, a University of Virginia junior. Philanthropic bashes and school-sponsored speaker events are also prime time for gratis grubs. Grab a slice of pizza and take in a lecture.

Have a drink on me Students pour beaucoup bucks down the drain when indulging in conveniences like Starbucks and bottled water. Invest in a coffeemaker so you can brew your own, and get yourself a travel mug. Pick up a refillable water bottle too if your college’s tap is tolerable. Bonus: It’s better for the environment.

That's Entertainment

Life doesn’t have to be a snore just because your pockets are empty. Money buys neither happiness nor a stellar social life. You can get out and about without tossing around a ton of green.

Be art smart Your campus is probably rife with free productions, concerts and workshops. Problem is, nobody really hears about them … and when people do, the enthusiasm is usually lower than the grade on your last calculus test. Time to do some research (track down calendars of events), gather up your dorm mates and head to the next pay-what-you-can play or free movie screening. Even if it’s bad, you’ll get a few laughs -- or at least the opportunity to heckle!

Speak Greek Not joining a frat or sorority will save you a lot of cash right out the gate. But what happens when you want to get into the best party of the year and don’t have the connections? Exchange names of brothers and sisters you know with friends and ask them to do the same -- on most college campuses, name dropping is the ticket to free admission. Once you’re inside, you’ll get beverages … and if you’re lucky, maybe even a few phone numbers.

Out on the town Be in the know too when it comes to events in neighboring areas. Community organizations often host free outdoor festivals with live music. Local restaurants have early-bird specials. Theater workshops and art galleries frequently offer free or reduced admission. (Again, don’t forget to ask about student rates.) Read newspapers and pay attention to fliers. It could pay off.

Any singles? If you have a significant other who saps all your savings, it may be time to have a chat about cutting back on unnecessary costs or to ask your partner to pull his or her own weight. If this person is not important to you, you may even consider living the single life for now. Romantic dinners and little gifts add up. Is it worth it? Your call.

Shop Till You Plop

Enter upscale department stores and exclusive boutiques at your own risk, but you don’t have to totally give up the urge to splurge. Just tone it down a few notches.

Clothes the deal Punch up your wardrobe without breaking the bank: shop clearance racks. (The best ones are where an additional markdown is given to already slashed prices.) Look for one-of-a-kind finds in thrift and consignment stores. Pick up inexpensive accessories at discount stores and chain boutiques.

Gotta dollar? Discover the beauty of the dollar store. It’s great for party supplies, stationery, candles, soaps, toiletries and tons more. Whether you’re buying useless trinkets or practical necessities, think about it: You can walk in there with a 10-spot and leave with lots of loot. Heck, you can scrape together a dollar plus tax in pocket change and treat yourself to something.

Be a coupon king or queen Keep a lookout for coupons on one-day shopping events at major department stores. Also sign up for email notifications of store specials and be sure to check online for Internet coupons before making a big purchase. (Restaurants and fast food chains run a lot of coupon specials too, so keep your eyes on the prize.)

Beauty booty Ladies, fine department stores dole out free samples at the cosmetics counters. Want to road test a lip color or facial moisturizer or new perfume? March on over there with an air of confidence and ask the consultant to show you some options. She’ll likely give you mini-sized products to try at home.

What a card! If you’re a die-hard shopaholic experiencing severe withdrawal, hold off before reaching into your cash stash by keeping in mind that the holidays are right around the bend. “It might be painful to wait all semester,” says Appalachian State senior Diane Vachon, “but soon enough you’ll have a dozen gift cards with your name on them.”

Common Cents

Ask not what you can do for your school but what your school can do for you. Universities give back to their student patrons in plenty of ways, so take advantage.

Be book smart The library isn’t just for studying, using the Net and people-watching. It actually contains books -- a revelation, I know. If you’re taking subjects like lit, history or philosophy, the library could relieve a big financial burden. Instead of turning to the expensive school bookstore (or even Amazon) for a book, do a quick search on the libe’s browser to see if it’s available. Then drop-kick the kid who’s about to check it out.

Get off your lazy butt If you have access to the campus gym and you’re paying for a pricey fitness membership, stop. Other free-of-charge physical activities: walking, jogging, hiking, in-line skating, riding your bike, a pickup basketball game, lifting weights in your room, dropping to the floor to do sit-ups and push-ups … shall we go on?

Let’s make a deal You’re a smart cookie, so figure out how to split costs with your roommate. Double up on your laundry to save quarters. Share a printer, swap playlists and take the same cab home from a party. And if you’re both heading out of town, consider carpooling. Even if you and your roomie aren’t the best of buds, a road trip is always less taxing when there’s company … and music.

Hop on that job “The No. 1 thing I can say is find a job on campus,” offers up Wabash College junior Mack O’Shaughnessy. “It’s the best way to get some extra cash in your pocket.” On-campus stores and restaurants are often hiring. Just don’t tell the folks: You still need someone’s sympathy, especially when it comes in the form of a crisp Benjamin.

Sorry!

Whew, where did the first semester go? Up to this point, college has been something that will happen "later." Sure, you got a dose of it on a campus tour and at orientation, but the rubber really hits the road soon.

Remember, pack a little patience as you prepare for the move. There are going to be A LOT of others going through what you're going through, it'll probably be hot, and you can't assure everything will go as planned. Through all of that, remember what a big day it is and enjoy it!

To further assist you, be sure to check out our free "pre-move" chapter on our website.

Hometown Author

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to head back to my hometown to visit family and take part in our annual town celebration. It was great seeing lots of friends from the past. A special shout out to my pal Monte who said this fall he's going to sell our book at his tattoo shop by Wartburg College. An advanced "thank you" to Monte for his continued support.

I also had the pleasure of running into Jason Myers, a friend who I went to high school with back in the day. A couple years ago I had reconnected with Jason and learned he had moved out to San Fransisco and had a book deal in the works. Since then, Jason has published two books (Exit Here and The Mission) through Simon and Schuster publishing. When we first started looking at publishing options, Jason gave me some great advice. This weekend was no different. It has been great to see him continue to see such great success with his books. Check his books out for sure....I know these are just the first of many more books he'll put out there. Congrats, Jason, on your success!

One last thing...if you do find yourself near my hometown of La Porte City, IA, be sure to check out my dad's store/museum. Very interesting items AND you can pick up The Voice of College there.

~Kipp

Top 10: Things to Do Before You Bolt

By Lauren Joffe for The Real College Guide

Hasta la vista, Mom and Dad. Hello, independence … but wait! Not so fast. Before you hit the road and leave your parentals behind, make sure you’re fully prepared for your new life of unwavering autonomy by spending your summer days wisely. Here, 10 things to do before you bolt. Ready, set …

1. Check up on your computer

New computers rarely come with programs like Microsoft Office, which you’ll definitely need, so be sure to purchase before you’re stuck handwriting your first assignment. And if you’re using an older comp, make sure it’s ready to take the heat: Since you will be on it all the time, install any updates or think about an upgrade. Also, find out if your school offers wireless Internet access (and if your computer is compatible) or whether you’ll need an Ethernet cable. Note: Some schools prohibit users without spyware or virus protection from connecting to the network. So, seriously, get the deets!

2. Make nice with your new dorm mate

As if you need us to tell you, check out her Facebook or MySpace page so you can get a feel for what you’re in for. Then buckle down and dial her digits for a quick chat to break the ice. Ask if there’s anything you should be aware of (like her fatal allergy to dusk or fear of the dark) and let her know of any immediate concerns you might have (like the fact that you can’t live without cable, and you’re relying on her to bring the big screen).

3. Do it up at a discount department store

Knock out the staples on your to-buy list before the selection is sold out: sheets, towels, toiletries and storage containers. But also pick up the following often-forgotten items you do not want to leave home without:

One-cup coffeemaker Brew your own instead of wasting a whole meal swipe for a cup o’ joe from the dining hall or blowing wads of money at Starbucks.

Mattress pad Make your dorm cot as comfy as the cushy oasis you’re used to at home while protecting yourself from whatever lived on your bed before you.

Rubber flip-flops Save yourself from the foot infections, clumps of hair and other mysterious masses that live in your communal shower.

Power strip Surge-protect your PC while hooking up your iPod station and hair dryer all at once.

4. Secure your class schedule

Enrollment deadlines are not meant to be ignored. In fact, the earlier you sit down to set your schedule, the better your course selection will be -- so definitely don’t wait until the last minute. Also, pay attention to class restrictions, since some courses may require department approval ahead of time.

5. Plan your budget

Living costs at college range from campus to campus -- the amount of money you’ll need largely depends on the location of your campus (cities can be more expensive) and the choices you make (like ordering in instead of suffering one more dining hall meal). Extra expenses will include social costs (movies, concerts, game tickets, cover for some parties), toiletries, food and drink beyond your meal plan, and transportation. Ask an upperclassman or student advisor how much cash she spends on average each week. Then pool your summer savings to determine whether you can cover your own expenses. If you need help, ask your parents or start looking for a part-time job on campus -- before you get there.

6. Visit your school’s Web site

Your university may offer registration guides, campus news and summertime get-to-know-each-other sessions that you definitely do not want to miss out on -- especially if you’re in the habit of throwing college junk mail in the trash (which is where important info may very well be). Plus, seeing your campus colors on the screen will psych you up -- or at the very least, calm your nerves and get you into the spirit.

7. Get packing

Whether you’re shipping all your stuff UPS or loading up the car and driving cross-country, don’t leave packing to the last minute, when you’ll want to laze around and hang out with friends you won’t be seeing for a while. Designate an area of your house or bedroom to stow things you buy especially for college or things you don’t use daily but know you’ll need to take. Do not overpack! The amount of space you will have in your new room is likely much smaller than your current living quarters. Only bring what’s necessary, as your parents can always mail any left-behind belongings.

8. Put together a tool kit

Once you’re at school on your own, you’ll be shocked how often you’ll need a pair of scissors or a screwdriver -- even if you’ve never used one. If you need to hang a poster or fix a loose screw, a simple, handy kit will be of great use when you least expect it. Bring a little box with a screwdriver (both Phillips and flathead), hammer, pliers, nails and screws. An inexpensive small cordless drill/screw gun is a good investment too. Pack scissors as well as adhesives, like sticky tack and tape, with your desk stuff.

9. Get protection

There’s no harm in being prepared for safe sex even if you have no particular plan or person in mind with whom to have it.

10. Hang with your high school pals

You know you’re going to miss your hometown friends, especially during the first few weeks you are apart. Yeah, you’ll make a whole slew of new friends. But make some memories first by hanging with the crew this summer.

Cold is always safe!

The other day while helping with an orientation session, a family member said one of their biggest fears was their son's ability to do the simple things in college....like laundry. Most of the crowd laughed at that, but it got me thinking back to my first year of college.

If I remember correctly, I made a quick trip home for the Labor Day weekend and all my dirty laundry came with me, so I avoided doing my own laundry for a bit. A week or two later, the moment arrived....I had a big old mesh bag full of clothes and I headed down to the laundry room. Luckily, my roommate gave me the advice of, "If you wash it in cold, you'll be safe." That was all I needed to know....and to this day I still follow that advice.

Sometimes the littlest new things in college can be the scariest, but there are plenty of people around to help out. It has a sense of newness to it and is usually pretty welcomed after the sometimes long winter months. For high school students, especially Seniors, it is a very exciting time. I can remember the excitement of prom, awards ceremonies, senior send offs and lots of other fun things like that.

With this sense of closure and celebration comes the thoughts of....COLLEGE! It is OFFICIALLY time to start getting excited for the transition to college. If you haven't already, be sure you are getting all your applications done if not already (admissions, campus housing, scholarships, etc). You may even take another visit to the campus you are planning on attending. Start picturing yourself there only a few short months from now. Excited yet?

Balancing all of these emotions can be tough. Some classmates may be really attached to the relationships and anything else associated with high school. While others may be ready to move on. My advice....do both! Enjoy the time with your friends and close out your high school career strong...and it's ok to be excited for the next stage of life as well. And be sure to keep track of how many time you hear the following song this spring. :)

Should I drop this class?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 138px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ugJq-I3nMjk/S43WG9GhCCI/AAAAAAAAAZY/ZPoAOs8TWIs/s320/drop.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444242939530250274" />
By Lauren Joffe for The Real College Guide

Having some serious issues with that one course?

* You don’t have enough credits to remain a full-time student.

* It’s too late to enroll in another course.

* The class is a requirement for your major (and you won’t be able to fit it into your schedule next time around).

* The information is valuable or otherwise useful. (“I ended up staying enrolled because I knew the information would help me later,” says Michael. “I suppose if I never learned some basic info, I’d be behind in other classes.”)

* The class is a prerequisite.

* Excelling in the class can help you cozy up to the professor for a future job or internship.

* The add/drop date has passed (and you can’t recover course fees).

* Dropping a course will mess up a scholarship or grant.

* You’re this close to meeting your requirements (and this class will get you there).

* You’re going in for the homestretch (i.e., approaching finals week).

* Dropping will prevent you from graduating on time, studying abroad or taking an internship.

New Ways to Beat Stress

By David Replogle for The Real College Guide

Tough classes, tougher teachers and a super-tight schedule can put some serious stress on your system. So why not try these unconventional methods for relaxing both body and mind?

You’ve got a 15-credit course load. Extracurriculars. It all adds up to a lot of one thing: stress.

We know you’re trying to pull off a juggling act, but it’s important to take some time to chill and rejuvenate if you want to really be on top of your game. But instead of relying on dated techniques, check out these new and unusual ways to combat stress.

Healing the Mind

Out with the old In the past decade, yoga studios have sprung up from coast to coast to help people get bend-y and discover their inner peace. Your school’s gym or rec center probably offers drop-in sessions, and yoga is still a great option to relieve tension, but finding more specific variations to suit your needs is the new trend.

In with the new “You can find yoga geared toward increased flexibility, meditation or even acrobatics,” says Deborah DeHaven, a Northern Virginia yoga practitioner and instructor who teaches a variety of private workshops. For stress relief, DeHaven points to the growing sect of yoga nidra. The ancient technique involves deep breathing, deep relaxation and an even deeper sense of self. According to DeHaven, yoga nidra can help relieve muscular, emotional and mental stress. Better yet, it’s suited to all skill levels. We haven’t seen this strain of yoga pop up just yet on DVD, but you can do a Google search for classes in your area.

Healing the Body

Out with the old The 21st century has led to a rise in health-conscious diets. Organic, all-natural, whole-grain, pesticide-free -- who can keep it all straight? But eating healthfully, along with regular exercise and sufficient sleep, is key in keeping stress to a minimum. And now you can find items that are tailor-made to your relaxation needs.

In with the new Yogi is one of many brands hopping aboard the spiritual health bandwagon. The company’s Web site even allows you to “discover your perfect tea.” For getting rid of tension, that means choosing between tempting options like Comforting Chamomile or Kava Stress Relief. “These teas are based on wholes, not parts -- on health and not taste,” says a Yogi rep. “The herbs found in them are strictly natural.” Of course, it helps too to avoid excessive amounts of stimulants (read: caffeine) and depressants (read: alcohol).

Healing the Soul

Out with the old Sometimes it pays to be self-indulgent, like after scoring an A on your math midterm or landing that internship. A night out with friends to get your mind off a recent breakup isn’t so bad either. In terms of getting rid of stress, though, you may fare better helping others. So instead of splurging on the latest edition of “Rock Band” to take the mind off life’s tedious troubles, try another route.

In with the new When you’re stressed and depressed, it’s easy to focus on what your life is lacking instead of the lives of others. Through volunteering, the focus can be turned outward. Kate Houck, a junior at the University of Richmond, volunteers weekly at a local nursing home and food bank. “It helps to distract from my everyday life, and at the same time it’s a great cause,” says Houck. “Each day I get home after volunteering, it helps me relax and worry less about the little things.” Try giving some of your time to hospitals, animal shelters or after-school programs. The joy, enrichment and satisfaction you’ll get will put your own stress into perspective.

 Making Peace With the Devil

Out with the old Wallowing in self-pity. Grinding your nails to the quick. Pacing. People have reacted to stress in these ways for ages. Healthy? No way!

In with the new Rather than internalizing stress, sometimes it pays to get angry. Occasionally, we all need to go a little mad. Get your butt to the gym and punch the bag for a bit. Go ahead and write that four-page tirade to your ex (but please, sit on it for a few days before deciding to send it). Or, hey, smash a few dishes. It’ll be a nice break from reality.

New Partnership

We are excited to announce a new partnership with The Real College Guide. This online guide offers additional insights and information to help college students. There are generally two sides of this argument. The first being, "You're getting a free education, you should stay and graduate." The second being, "You have a chance to make millions of dollars next year. GO NOW!" Having never been in that position to make that choice, I cannot tell you which I would take. We've seen these things go both ways, so there probably isn't a "right" answer. I think it's always wise for the student athlete to do what's best for themselves and their future.

I do, however, think people need to be careful of being too critical of these student athletes (making them feel shameful for the choice they make). There are some who have risked millions of dollars to return to school and it's cost them. Others who leave early and go on to a very lucrative professional career (sometimes only a few years) which a college degree could never financially compete with over a 30 year career.

If I meet somene very opinionated about this, sometimes I hsare this example. What if your son/daughter or sibling were an engineering student. It could be presumed if they finished their degree they'd probably land a job out of college in the $40-65,000 range. What would you do if they were talented and in their sophomore or junior year a large engineering company said to them, "You're skills are great and we want to get you on board...degree or no degree....we'll give you $250,000 if you start working for us now." Would you still feel as strongly about them finishing their degree? Another thing I've brought up to folks...why don't people make the same fuss about a teenage actor/actress/singer who is already making millions? I'm sure they easily could attend college, but the public is ok with their talent making them money with no education.

Those are just some points to ponder about this issue. Again, none of us usually know the whole story or situation and ultimately, the choice they make is theirs.

Technological Adultry

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; When I read that at first I chuckled because it seems facebook is always in the news for something. But the more I thought of it, it made me think of the new reality of the world we live in. I’m a big fan of the potential facebook brings to our lives. It’s a great way to stay connected to friends and family…in fact, think of what this will look like for younger generations. I’m sure most people will have it at an early age and could build life-long friend lists. Older folks (like me) add people along the way and reconnect with some from the past. If you wonder what your friend from 6th grade is doing, you punch up their name and are able to see photos, updates on their career, and probably some very current information from their status updates.

This also can lead to information overload. With the newsfeed function, you may not have talked to that friend from 6th grade for 10 years, but may be able to piece together small pieces of their life (like how bad traffic was this morning, how much they love American Idol, etc) or more significant things happening…this information may be overwhelming when you get 200 friends….then 500…then 1000…then 10,000…..etc. And when you get that many friends, how much time do you spend “checking in” on them….if you have hundreds, that obsession with checking their statuses and such can start being a large amount of time that you are not able to connect and communicate with people who are in close proximity to you.

So, what’s my conclusion? Be careful! The statistic at the start of this blog about divorce is very real and could get worse as time goes on….and this is just one statistic. There are other potential evils (taking up too much time, obsessions with updates, information about you out there that may not shed the best light on you, etc).

This past summer I had the pleasure of visiting some relatives who live in Texas. My one cousin has been in the computer industry for many years and been very successful. As we were making small talk, he was telling me about his business travels. I asked him what type of technology he uses when he travels. I was expecting him to pull out the latest/greatest smart phone or other tech gadget. He said, “I don’t have any. I’ve been working with technology and computers long enough to know that there are many bad things that come from them.” At first I was a bit shocked, but I then got to thinking about it and applauded him for his honest look at technology and his professional/personal opinion on their dangers. Again, be careful out there!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

The age old question growing up was always, "what do you want to be when you grow up?" I remember never really knowing or wanting to commit. It seemed there were about three or four options: fireman, policeman, teacher, pro football player. That "unknown" continued for me as it does for many students as they go to college. As we used to say at orientation, "undecided is our most popular major for freshmen students." Where am I going with all of this? Take a moment and read this article on the current job satisfaction rate.

I know in times of a rough economy, many folks are thankful to just have a steady paycheck. But I think this article is a reminder that as you think about how you want to make a living, take some time to really think through it. It's easy to go for the "top dollar" types of careers...but if you are not happy, is it worth it? Yes, every job will have parts that are not fun or that aren't as enjoyable, but hopefully your current or future job is something that is satisfying for you.

Just some food for thought and a reminder to find joy in whatever you do...it makes stuff a lot better in the long run

Semester Break

Ah, semester break. For college students, it can be a huge relief for many reasons. It's amazing how quickly a semester flies by. It seems like just yesterday the excitement of the fall semester was happening, now it's over. This is a great time for reflection. How did you do academically? What lessons were learned? What will you do differently? Were you too involved in extra activities or do you want to try taking on more this next semester. Take some time to reflect some, because once the next semester starts, it'll move just as fast (if not faster) than the fall did.

Two thoughts as you begin pondering last semester/preparing for the next. The first is this, you have a whole semester ahead of you. That's right, the year is only halfway done. You can still meet new friends, get involved, and pull up a GPA if it fell lower than expected. Secondly, think of this...as you walk into your classes in January. You'll have all "A's" in your classes. Rather than chasing A's, think of it as you already have them and you just can't loose too many points to loose the A's.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 233px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ugJq-I3nMjk/SzAtUhyZiqI/AAAAAAAAAVs/Hy2l4ZJipXg/s320/academics_intro.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417880182417099426" />

In the meantime, relax and prepare for the spring semester. Our adviser had a nifty tool on his computer which could calculate estimated cost of attendance at a variety of different types of schools 18 years from now as well as how much we'd need to save each month to hit the mark, realizing that unlike retirement, the window to save is much shorter for college savings.

Assuming our daughter may think like her folks, we had our adviser plug in a 4-year, state school, assuming in-state tuition. He asked what percentage we'd like to help fund. We went with forty percent. As he entered this information and the computer calculated, he asked us to guess how much 40% would be...not knowing, he broke the news....$85,000!!! Again, that's only 40% and that's for in-state. Granted, there is some inflation added in and such, but holy cow, we were surprised!

The cost of higher education continues to rise, especially in times of a tough economy and less funding from tax dollars. I write this as a reminder of the true investment an education is....and that people should remember those numbers as they think about skipping class, being ok with a "C" grade or taking their time getting that degree. If you bought a new car each year, you wouldn't neglect it like many neglect their education. And remember, if you take out loans, you'll be reminded each month as you write those checks.

Pig Flu!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ugJq-I3nMjk/Swg3kV9V3JI/AAAAAAAAAUY/bsfno1A5Sp8/s320/angry-pig-doll.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406632450167528594" />

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, I'm sure you've heard of the "swine flu" aka H1N1. While this has been well reported in terms of the general public, college campuses are taking a big hit due to the large numbers of people in close proximity.

It seems like two messages are out there. One being the "it's just the flu...you'll get over it" and the other is "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE." This has made it difficult for folks to take it seriously and some are probably taking it WAY to seriously.

What's my point? My point is wash your hands. :-) Sometimes I am shocked to see the hygiene levels of those out there. Coughing into their hands, rubbing their face, touching door knobs, etc. I would encourage you to think about your sneezing and coughing habits and wash your hands frequently. And, maybe more importantly, manage your time (get good sleep) and stress so you are less likely to get sick. Best of luck....and watch out for those pigs!

Book Signing

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ugJq-I3nMjk/SrmKmQta5AI/AAAAAAAAARw/PNHNeivVQaA/s320/book+signing.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384487219423273986" />

A big THANK YOU to those who came out to see us at the book signing in Ames, IA this past Friday. The reality of studying, exams, conflicts with those around them and just the amount of decisions they get to make on a daily basis. This is a critical time in the semester, especially for freshmen. It may seem like there is a lot of time left in the semester, but patterns that are formed early are often hard to break. From study habits to interactions with a roommate and everything in between, the patterns are forming.

Take a moment or a few (go to a coffee shop, take a long walk, seclude yourself in the library, etc) alone and evaluate the areas of your new college life. Be honest with yourself. If there is something that doesn't feel right or is concerning to you, find ways to fix it soon. If you aren't sure, find someone like an RA, Hall Director, your adviser, or another university official to help you.

College is a big investment of time and money. If you bought a new car and in the first month the radio wasn't working correctly or the engine was making noise, you'd want it fixed, right? :-)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 233px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ugJq-I3nMjk/SrmH4jmrJFI/AAAAAAAAARo/bz5VK1lGvCg/s320/i+guess+i%27ll+take+them+as+they+come.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384484235198014546" />

College students ROCK! The pageantry and tradition surrounding it always reminds me of how fun college was. Nothing beats the cheering crowd, marching band and collective optimism for the home team. For some students, these traditions are why they chose to go to a certain school. College athletes can become campus celebrities (and national celebrities in some cases) as they showcase their talents to the campus and country.

With that being said, take a look at this article (or video below) about a football player suspended THE ENTIRE SEASON for throwing a punch after a game: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4446898

Prior to the announcement, I wondered how the college would handle this situation. If you read the previous post about choices and consequences, here is a real life example of a choice this player made and the consequence he now has to face. I wonder if this player is regretting his decision? I bet he is. I hope he truly learned from this. When others hear about this (athletes or not), I think it's a big reminder to do the right thing and make good choices as you go about your days. I really do commend Coach Kelly for this decision. He may very well catch some static for doing this to a star player, but I think the message he sends shows his own class and integrity. It also will hopefully help other remember to play with sportsmanship and keep the traditions of college football alive for the right reasons.

Choices Galore!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; If you are ok with what the consequence will be, make whatever choices you need to. Working with college students, I witness many of their choices and consequences. I’m happy to report that I get to see a lot of cool things happen in people’s lives. Great opportunities, scholarships, jobs, positive relationships and the list goes on and on. Sometimes I get to see students make the wrong choice, but learn from the consequences and become better people.

Unfortunately, I do too see some students continually make poor choices. Sometimes a bunch of little things add all add up (not studying, watching too much tv, not effectively communicating, procrastinating, etc.) and slowly become a ticket out of college. And on some occasions, students do things which earn more serious consequences (cheating on an exam, consuming too much alcohol, vandalism, trying drugs, etc.). For many of these choices, I see people’s lives take serious detours from what was planned. Not only do these choices hurt their own lives, but the circle of friends and loved ones also usually are directly affected (and can be very costly).

Do I sound like a parent? I hope not (although, I do have a 6 month old daughter). The point I’m trying to make is it’s amazing the amount of choices that we are allowed to make in our lives. When you are faced with a difficult decision or are just unsure, trust your gut and the advice of older and wiser people.

And remember…make all your consequences good ones!

Move in time!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The energy on campus is elevated, the streets are busier and everyone seems excited to be part of the campus community. I've been on "the other side" of move in for the past 10 years helping others successfully maneuver the process, but I remember the feelings my first year. The excitement started months before the big day. I made lists of what I needed, I pictured myself in a small room with a roommate and I got excited over the little things (like having my OWN bottle of shampoo and tube of toothpaste, not having to use whatever was bought for our family home). I remember packing up the truck the night before the big move. It'd been talked about for so long, but the eve of departure had arrived. Looking back, my actual move-in day seems like a blur. I confidently walked up to pick up the key to my room as my parents began loading up the hand-truck for the first load (by the way, great thing to bring with you to save trips to your room). As we finished unloading, the excitement of setting up my new space probably overshadowed the need to properly say "goodbye" to my parents. As they left it sunk in that I was "on my own."

The move in process really is an exciting time, but can also be stressful. Planning ahead, but also being flexible during the process are some of the keys to making the day both a functional and an emotional success. For lots more tips, tricks and advice, be sure to check out Chapters 3-5 in the book. Happy moving to all!

Welcome

On behalf of The Voice of College team, I'd like to welcome you to our blog.
